Overview
A Connecticut-based innovator in sustainable food waste processing transforms surplus and discarded food materials into high-value, nutrient-rich animal feed ingredients. By diverting organic waste from landfills and repurposing it as a replacement for conventional feedstock such as soy and corn, the facility supports circular economy goals and sustainable agriculture.
The Challenge
Processing post-consumer and commercial food waste generates intense odors along with organic emissions during receiving, handling, and thermal processing stages.
While VOCs were present, the primary challenge was effective odor control to maintain compliance, minimize community impact, and support continued facility growth.
The client required a robust and flexible air pollution control system capable of:
- Managing variable process conditions
- Controlling strong process odors
- Meeting Connecticut environmental regulations
- Supporting future expansion
The Solution
Ship & Shore Environmental designed and supplied a custom Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer (RTO) system, engineered for initial capacity with expandability up to 50,000 SCFM.
The system was specifically configured to treat process odors and associated organic emissions generated throughout operations.
Designed to achieve up to 98% destruction efficiency, the RTO provides:
- Reliable odor and emissions control
- High thermal efficiency
- Optimized airflow and advanced controls
- Reduced natural gas consumption through energy recovery
The Results
The installation enabled the client to achieve:
- Up to 98% odor and emissions destruction efficiency
- Full compliance with Connecticut air quality requirements
- Reduced environmental impact and improved community acceptance
- Expandable capacity for future growth
In addition, Ship & Shore identified and secured available energy incentives. Through improved thermal efficiency and reduced fuel consumption, the client realized annual energy savings exceeding $560,000.
The Value
This project highlights how advanced air pollution control systems can go beyond compliance—delivering effective odor management, energy efficiency, and strong financial returns.
Cleaner operations. Better community impact. Smarter energy use.
