Pentane is an essential blowing agent in Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) production, but emissions can occur throughout manufacturing, handling, and storage. Effective control begins with identifying emission sources and designing the collection system around actual process conditions.

Common Pentane Emission Sources
Pentane may be released during:
- Raw-material bead box opening
- Pre expansion and fluid-bed drying
- Material transfer and aging
- Enclosed aging rooms and metal silos
- Hot-room operations
- Product storage
- Regrind and recycling
- Areas with EPS dust accumulation
Each source can have different emission rates and airflow requirements, making proper system design critical to reliable control.
1. Regenerative Thermal Oxidizers
Regenerative Thermal Oxidizers (RTOs) provide an energy-efficient method for destroying pentane and other VOCs. S&SE RTOs can achieve more than 99% VOC destruction efficiency while recovering heat from the treated exhaust.
The regenerative heat-transfer process returns recovered thermal energy to the incoming process air, reducing supplemental fuel demand and helping lower operating costs.
2. Permanent Total Enclosures
Permanent Total Enclosures (PTEs) are designed to contain emissions from selected process areas and prevent uncontrolled releases. When combined with an RTO or other control device, PTEs can:
- Improve containment of fugitive emissions
- Direct collected exhaust to the control system
- Maintain controlled airflow around emission sources
- Support compliance testing and monitoring
3. Heat Recovery
Additional energy savings can be achieved through technologies such as stack economizers, feedwater make-up heat exchangers, and combustion-air preheaters.
Depending on system conditions, these technologies can reduce exhaust temperatures to approximately 300°F, decrease cooling-water requirements, and return useful heat to the process. Combined measures can improve overall system efficiency by approximately 4%.
