Keeping Ductwork and Ozone Exhaust Systems Working Efficiently
An effective VOC control system starts long before the exhaust reaches the RTO. Collection hoods, enclosures, ductwork, dampers, fans, and exhaust lines all play a role in moving contaminated air from the process to the treatment system.
In printing and packaging facilities, this becomes even more important. Solvent-based inks and adhesives can generate VOC emissions, while corona treaters may produce ozone. A poorly maintained air path can create restrictions, pressure losses, unnecessary fan energy use, reduced capture performance, and corrosion concerns.
🔍 Inspect the Entire Air Path
Ductwork should not be treated as simply a connection between the process and the oxidizer. Regular inspections can help identify:
- Damaged connections, leaks, and deteriorated seals
- Restricted or partially closed dampers
- Buildup or obstructions that increase pressure drop
- Changes in fan performance or airflow
- Corrosion in ozone-exposed duct sections
Restricted airflow paths can increase pressure drop and fan power while disrupting the performance of the overall exhaust system.
⚙️ Special Attention for Corona Treatment
Ozone is highly reactive, making material selection important for exhaust systems. According to S&SE’s technical guidance, plastic or stainless-steel ductwork may be appropriate for new ozone exhaust lines to help minimize corrosion. Where ozone exhaust is routed to a main oxidizer header, careful duct routing can also help limit unnecessary exposure of the system to ozone.
