AM Mondays: What Your RTO Is Telling You

A regenerative thermal oxidizer is built for continuous VOC control, but reliable performance depends on what happens after commissioning. Preventive maintenance is not simply about fixing problems; it is about tracking changes before they become lost efficiency, higher fuel use, emissions issues, or unplanned downtime.

MONITOR THE SYSTEM, NOT JUST THE ALARMS

Record combustion-chamber and outlet temperatures, pressure drop, airflow, fuel use, VOC performance, fan current, and alarm history. Compare trends with the normal operating baseline. Weekly walkdowns should check for vibration, unusual sounds, heat marks, duct leaks, and instrument problems.

KEEP VALVES & ACTUATORS IN SYNC

Switching valves control process airflow through the RTO’s heat-recovery beds. Inspect valve seats, seals, linkages, actuators, limit switches, position feedback, instrument air, and cycle timing. Leakage or incomplete movement can affect heat recovery, pressure balance, and VOC carryover.

PROTECT THE CERAMIC MEDIA

Ceramic media is the heart of regenerative heat recovery. Monitor bed pressure drop and temperature profiles, and inspect for particulate buildup, fouling, cracking, settling, channeling, or chemical attack. Depending on the contaminant, cleaning or a controlled bake-out may restore performance; severely damaged or fouled media may require replacement.

LOOK BEYOND THE RTO

An RTO cannot compensate for poor upstream capture. Inspect ductwork, expansion joints, dampers, PTEs, fans, and transitions for leaks, corrosion, restrictions, and airflow imbalance. Verify source capture and maintain proper airflow so the designed VOC concentration reaches the oxidizer.

DON’T FORGET THE “HIDDEN” COMPONENTS

Burners, igniters, flame scanners, fuel trains, thermocouples, refractory, insulation, cold-face supports, PLC/HMI controls, safety interlocks, and instrumentation all deserve scheduled inspection. Keep critical spare parts available to reduce emergency downtime.
