#TechTalk - Smarter Collection System Design For Flexographic Industry (Presses & Laminators): Why Ductwork Isn’t Just Ductwork

When Flexographic facilities add or replace presses, the focus is usually on speed, color stations, and print quality — not ductwork. But in air pollution control, and specifically Regenerative Thermal Oxidizers (RTO’s) your collection system directly determines how well your oxidizer performs — and more importantly, how much it costs to run.

Why It Matters

Poorly designed collection systems (Piping & Ducting) can lead to:

  • Undersized RTO’s (unable to meet required Destruction & Removal Efficiency- DRE)
  • Oversized oxidizers (higher capital & fuel cost)
  • Inefficient capture (compliance issues)
  • Wasted airflow (larger fans, more energy use)
  • Automated Capture (tied to presses on or off)

After 25 years of working with Flexo facilities, we’ve seen the cost of treating collection systems as an afterthought. And we’ve seen the benefits when it’s done right! Done Right is always Better!

Smarter Collection System =Smaller, Smarter RTO Systems = MONEY IN YOUR POCKET!

Ship & Shore designs their RTO systems to minimize airflow while maximizing VOC capture, which allows for:

  • Smaller oxidizer sizing
  • Lower natural gas usage
  • Reduced electrical load
  • Higher VOC destruction efficiency

For Flexo, That Means:

  • PTEs around press decks for full enclosure
  • Cascading and/or Recirculating airflow to reduce total volume
  • Targeted ducting for aging vs. new presses
  • Modular layouts for future press additions

Planning Press Upgrades?

Before you specify a new oxidizer, evaluate your collection system design. You may NOT need a larger system — just a better-engineered one.

Ship & Shore’s team of engineers can help you review your layout and ensure you have the proper sized abatement strategy.
