VOC Control in Biomass Processing

As manufacturers and municipalities search for alternatives to landfilling, biomass processing has emerged as a practical way to recover value from waste materials. Instead of disposing of organic byproducts, facilities can convert them into useful fuel while reducing overall environmental impact.

Many operations process feedstocks such as wood waste, agricultural residues, food waste, biosolids, packaging materials, and selected plastic-containing streams. Through pyrolysis, these materials are heated in a controlled low-oxygen environment, producing syngas and biochar rather than being directly combusted.

While this process creates valuable products, it also generates process vapors containing volatile organic compounds (VOCs), hydrocarbons, and other contaminants that require treatment before discharge.

Common emission sources include:

  • Pyrolysis reactor vents
  • Syngas conditioning equipment
  • Feedstock drying systems
  • Material handling operations
  • Storage and transfer points

To address these challenges, many facilities utilize Direct-Fired Thermal Oxidizers (DFTOs). These systems thermally destroy VOCs by exposing contaminated gases to elevated temperatures and controlled residence times. Properly engineered systems can achieve destruction efficiencies greater than 99%, helping facilities meet stringent environmental requirements.

A key advantage of biomass applications is the energy content contained within the generated syngas. Once production stabilizes, this fuel-rich stream can significantly reduce supplemental burner demand and improve overall process economics.

Recovered thermal energy may be used for:

  • Feedstock drying
  • Steam generation
  • Hot water production
  • Process heating
  • Utility support systems

In addition to fuel generation, many facilities produce biochar, a carbon-rich material used in agriculture and soil improvement applications due to its ability to enhance moisture retention and nutrient management.

Industries Utilizing Biomass Technologies

Biomass and waste-conversion systems are increasingly found in:

  • Food and beverage manufacturing
  • Agricultural processing facilities
  • Animal feed operations
  • Wood products and forestry industries
  • Pulp and paper mills
  • Recycling and resource recovery facilities
  • Municipal waste processing operations
  • Wastewater treatment plants
  • Packaging manufacturing facilities

DFTO systems are engineered for high-temperature, long-term reliability with refractory construction, advanced combustion control, optimized burners, and Low/Ultra-Low-NOx options for consistent compliance. As waste streams grow, VOC abatement is increasingly used to support resource recovery, turning emissions into usable value while improving efficiency and sustainability.
