United States and China Agree to Work Together on Phase Down of HFCs

More than 100 countries have blocked using the Montreal protocol for reducing hydro fluorocarbons. China is the biggest producer of HFCs. Therefore, where china goes the others are expected to follow and make a big step toward protecting our planet from global warming.

The United States and China will work together to phase down the consumption and production of hydro fluorocarbons (HFCs). HFCs are not depleting the ozone layer but they do strongly increase greenhouse gases. There is not any doubt that HFCs emission growth could increase to nearly 20% of CO2 emissions by 2050. The United States and China agreed to phase down HFCs products based on the Montreal protocol.

For the past four years, the United States, Canada, and Mexico have proposed an amendment to the Montreal Protocol to reduce production, consumption and byproducts of HFCs. “The amendment includes a financial assistance component for countries that can already access the Protocol’s Multilateral Fund, and leaves unchanged the reporting and accounting provisions of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and Kyoto Protocol on HFC emissions”.
