Burger Pollution!!!

A UC Riverside researcher releases study that claims commercially cooked hamburgers cause more air pollution than diesel trucks. The study was co-funded by the South Coast Air Quality Management District and the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District.

The researcher found the charbroil equipment used in burger restaurants emits a large amount of particular matter in to air. The emissions from one burger is equal to the emissions from driving 143 miles with a 18 wheel diesel engine truck.

Bill Welch, the principle engineer and UC Riverside researcher, who found few regulations for the restaurant emissions, said they’re developing a contraption to trap the particulates.

“Our goal is to find something cost-effective and technically feasible to reduce the smoke,” said Welch.
