Why Environmental Enforcement Is Getting Tougher — Even Without New Laws

Many manufacturers assume that environmental compliance risk increases only when governments introduce new regulations. In reality, enforcement pressure is intensifying even in jurisdictions where environmental laws themselves have not changed.

Environmental agencies today have access to far more operational data than they did even a decade ago. Digital reporting systems, automated monitoring, and improved data analysis tools allow regulators to identify anomalies faster than ever.
Facilities often submit emissions data electronically. That information can be analyzed automatically for unusual patterns or inconsistencies. When those patterns appear, regulators can launch investigations much faster than in the past.
This means manufacturers may face increased scrutiny even without changes to the regulatory framework.
Industries that generate volatile organic compounds—such as plastics manufacturing, industrial coatings, printing, wood processing, and food manufacturing—are particularly affected.
“Environmental enforcement today is far more data-driven than it used to be,” said Anoosheh Oskouian. “Manufacturers must assume regulators have visibility into their emissions performance.”
