China and Clean Technology
December 26, 2012 5:40 pmThrough “China’s 12th Five Year Plan” China strives to use renewable energy in many forms.
The fundamental problems encountered are both technical and economical. There is a large gap between China and developed countries when it comes to key technologies in renewable energy sources. China plays a significant role in coal-based energy generation (about triple of its Global Coal-based generation) and has been increased annually. Renewable sources still lack competitiveness under recent market circumstances.
Although, China is working to develop technology innovation, it still needs a management system and market mechanism to adapt full-scale development of renewable energy.
Renewable goals during the 12th Five-Year plan are:
- About 20% of total energy supply is to come from renewable sources. With a majority of the renewable energy capacity coming from hydropower, wind and biomass.
- By 2015, 200 green energy demonstration counties, 1000 model villages, 30 new energy micro-grid and 100 new energy demonstration should be complete.
China is taking on an important role in renewable energy development programs. Simultaneously, development of renewable energies will provide comprehensive economic and social benefits.
Recently, china has become a global leader in the race to produce cleaner energy from coal. According to international environmental agency (IEA) the average operating energy efficiency of coal plant is under 29%. However, the new supercritical (SC) and ultra-supercritical (USC) coal-to-energy plants will achieve overall thermal efficiency of 44% and 48% respectively.
