Chevron to pay $231K fine for air pollution violations
July 18, 2012 6:14 pmState Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa and state Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Bob Martin, said the DEP and the federal Environmental Protection Agency filed a complaint accusing Chevron of violating air quality regulations.
State officials declared that Chevron agreed to pay a $231,875 penalty for air pollution violations and leaks for a period from 2004 to 2008 at its asphalt production plant in Perth Amboy. In addition, Chevron faced civil penalties of $32,500 per day for unresolved violations. Jeff Tittel, director of the Sierra Club’s New Jersey Chapter said “The fine given to Chevron for the violations is cheaper than if they were to retrofit the plant and put in place pollution control technologies. This is yet another example of the failure of the DEP in regards to holding polluters fully accountable”
