Client Challenge
A high volume paint manufacturing facility required a robust emissions control solution to manage airborne pollutants generated during coating and paint formulation operations. The facility needed to control volatile organic compounds (VOCs), xylene, paint vapors, and particulate matter while meeting environmental regulations and improving surrounding air quality under variable production conditions.
Ship & Shore Solution
Ship & Shore engineered and delivered an integrated air pollution control system combining regenerative thermal oxidation with high-capacity dust collection. The system was designed to provide stable performance, operational safety, and long-term reliability in a demanding industrial environment.
System Configuration
- Twin 3-chamber Regenerative Thermal Oxidizers operating in parallel
- Industrial dust collectors with centralized collection ducting
- Materials selected for corrosion resistance and continuous-duty operation
- Simultaneous treatment of particulate matter and organic vapors
Design Capacity & Operating Range
- Maximum exhaust flow: 160,000 m³/h
- VOC inlet concentration range: 800–10,500 mg/m³
- Ambient operating temperature: −14.8°C to 38°C
- VOC exhaust humidity controlled below 85%
- Low-elevation site with variable wind conditions
Safety & Risk Mitigation
- Integrated water spray and drainage system for fire suppression within activated carbon equipment
- Safety grids at rotary valve discharge points and fresh air damper inlets
- Proximity sensors to protect operators during dust handling and barrel emptying
- Explosion-proof control cabinets and reinforced control room design
Controls & Automation
- Centralized HMI platform for real-time monitoring and diagnostics
- Remote adjustment of system parameters
- Designed for safe operation in environments with flammable vapors
Performance Results
- Verified VOC removal efficiency of up to 99%
- Dust and solvent vapor emissions consistently maintained below regulatory limits
- Stable operation across fluctuating production rates
Maintenance & Longevity
- Ceramic media designed for approximately 15 years of service
- Annual replacement of dust collector filter bags, RTO pre-filters, and activated carbon
- Maintenance intervals adjusted based on production intensity
Project Outcome
This project demonstrates Ship & Shore’s ability to deliver integrated thermal oxidation and dust collection systems that achieve regulatory compliance, enhance operational safety, and provide long-term environmental performance.
The installed solution has contributed to measurable air quality improvements while supporting reliable, high-volume paint manufacturing operations.
