Refractory lining and insulation define the RTO’s thermal envelope. They protect steel shells, stabilize chamber temperatures, and preserve energy efficiency. Damage often develops gradually through cracking, erosion, or chemical attack—especially in applications with halogenated or acidic exhaust streams.

Preventive Focus Areas

During scheduled outages, refractory surfaces should be inspected for hot spots, spalling, gaps, or discoloration. Expansion joints and anchors must remain intact to allow thermal movement. External shell temperature scans can reveal insulation breakdown before internal damage becomes severe.

Why It Matters

Compromised refractory increases fuel consumption, stresses structural components, and accelerates corrosion. Left unchecked, minor lining damage can evolve into major rebuilds.

S&SE Recommendation

Ship & Shore Environmental advises thermal imaging inspections paired with internal visual reviews during major shutdowns to preserve system efficiency and avoid costly refractory failures.
