AM Mondays: Guardian of the Air – Expert Insights to Sustain RTO Performance

December 8, 2025

Daily & Weekly Checks

Steady RTO operation begins with routine monitoring. Track inlet/outlet temperatures, combustion chamber heat, pressure differentials, burner flame stability, and alarms. Weekly inspect fans, motors, belts, bearings, and look for leaks, vibrations, or unusual noises.

SSE Tip: Keep a digital log to spot trends and catch deviations early.

Valve & Actuator Health

Valves and actuators control airflow through media beds. Wear, leaks, or timing issues reduce efficiency, raise energy use, and risk shutdowns.

Tasks:

  • Quarterly inspections of valves, linkages, and pneumatic lines
  • Manual cycle tests for proper operation
  • Leak detection via pressure-decay or visual checks
  • Scheduled actuator and seal rebuilds

SSE Advice: Use a quarterly “valve health” checklist to prevent tdowntime.

Thermal Media & Heat Recovery

Ceramic media is the RTO’s thermal core. Fouling or thermal stress reduces efficiency and increases fuel use.

  • • Monthly pressure drop checks
  • Scheduled inspections for cracks, channeling, or contamination
  • Replace or clean media as needed

SSE Tip: Keep spare media packs to minimize downtime.

Airflow & Ducting Optimization

Even a top RTO underperforms if upstream collection is neglected. Leaks, poor airflow, or inefficient enclosures reduce VOC capture and raise costs.

  • Quarterly inspections of ductwork and joints
  • Verify Permanent Total Enclosures (PTEs) and airflow balance
  • Maintain ozone treatment lines and catalytic systems

SSE Advice: Conduct quarterly air-capture audits and annual ozone system inspections.

Why Preventive Maintenance Matters

Ignoring RTO upkeep reduces efficiency, increases fuel consumption, raises emissions, and risks regulatory non-compliance. A structured preventive maintenance program extends equipment life, cuts costs, and ensures compliance.

Ship & Shore Environmental Services Include:

  • On-site RTO audits
  • Media cleaning/replacement
  • Valve and actuator servicing
  • Ductwork and airflow evaluations
