AM Monday – Burner Systems; Stability Before Efficiency
March 2, 2026
The burner is the only active energy source in a Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer. Its role is not simply to add heat, but to maintain a stable oxidation temperature that allows the system to respond smoothly to changing process conditions. When the burner performs consistently, the RTO operates efficiently.
When it does not, instability propagates across the entire system.
Burner systems operate under demanding conditions that include fluctuating VOC loads, frequent cycling, and high-temperature exposure. Over time, fuel-air balance can drift, flame stability can degrade, and ignition or detection components can become unreliable. These issues rarely appear as outright failures; instead, they manifest as subtle instability.
Challenges:
Early signs include temperature oscillation, increased corrective burner cycling, higher NOx formation, and inconsistent destruction efficiency. As instability grows, switching valves, ceramic media, and refractory are subjected to additional thermal stress. In many cases, incomplete oxidation or nuisance shutdowns are incorrectly attributed to process variability rather than burner performance, delaying corrective action.
Solutions by Ship & Shore Environmental:
Ship & Shore Environmental (SSE) provides comprehensive burner system evaluation and tuning under real operating conditions. SSE technicians analyze flame characteristics, verify fuel-air ratios, inspect ignition and flame detection systems, and evaluate burner response to load changes. Adjustments are made to stabilize combustion across the full operating range, not just at steady state.
Results:
A properly tuned burner delivers consistent oxidation temperature, reduced fuel consumption, and lower emissions. System stability improves, downstream component wear is reduced, and nuisance shutdowns are minimized. SSE’s burner optimization restores predictable RTO performance and strengthens compliance margins.
